El 18 de mayo de 1980 a las 08.32 horas de la mañana, en el estado de Washington, USA, el suelo del Monte Santa Helena empezó a sacudirse hasta alcanzar la magnitud 5.1 Richter provocando el total derrumbe de la vertiente norte de la montaña, erupciones de vapor, ceniza y rocas y gigantescas explosiones que se oyeron a más de 100 kilómetros dejaron una amplia zona desolada y 57 personas perdieron la vida. El cielo se oscureció y al igual que ahora el volcán islandés Eyjafjallajökull, causó serios problemas aéreos en todo el noroeste de USA.
